Volvo Steps Up with its XC40 Recharge

The Volvo XC40 is known for its upscale character and considerable capabilities as an all-weather, family sport commuter. That tradition carries forward in the XC40 Recharge P8, Volvo’s first pure electric vehicle and a solid step toward its electrified future.

Volvo’s XC40 Recharge represents an important new direction for a company dedicated to electrification. Already, the brand offers a hybrid electric version of every car and SUV in its lineup. To start with a battery powered variant of the XC40 as its first all-electric model makes sense since this is Volvo’s most popular crossover SUV.

The XC40 Recharge P8 shares battery, charge, and electric motor components with the new Volvo/Geely Motors Polestar 2 electric fastback. Thus, power is provided by the same pair of 201 horsepower electric motors that produce a combined 402 horsepower and hefty 486 ft-lb torque. A zero to 60 mph sprint in the electrified X40 is estimated to take just 4.7 seconds. Energy for the electric motors is supplied by a 78 kWh lithium-ion battery pack located beneath the floor, which means there’s no intrusion on interior space.

Driving range on a full charge is estimated at 208 miles dependent on driving style, weather, and road conditions. Charging via a 240-volt home or public charger will take about 8 hours, while DC fast-charging will bring the batteries from near-depleted to 80 percent charge in 40 minutes. A portable 120-volt AC charger is provided for occasional use in a standard household outlet. Driving efficiency is rated at 85 MPGe in the city and 72 on the highway.

Exterior styling is twin to the conventional XC40. Volvo’s intention here is to integrate electric drive into the lineup, and does so seamlessly. The XC40 Recharge P8 AWD’s chunky, wide, and appealing bodyline is accented by a gloss black roof line in the Recharge variant, along with a full cab moonroof and 19-inch alloy wheels. The only clues that this is electric are a color-matched closed front grille, ‘Recharge’ badging, and a lack of tailpipes.

The XC40 Recharge is a very comprehensively-equipped, all-weather SUV featuring Volvo’s advanced driver assist and accident avoidance technologies. Interior highlights include Nubuck-upholstered power adjustable seats, cutting edge decor inlays, and a high performance audio system, with a Harmon Cardon upgrade available. A 12.3 inch digital driver’s display and 9 inch, Google-powered touch- and voice-command activated tablet center stack provide information and controls. Rounding things out is a leather-wrapped smart-wheel, leather shift knob, and contrasting gray headliner for pure Volvo style.

Suggested retail price for the XC40 Recharge is just under $55,000, placing it mid-pack among electric competitors.
