2017-prius-primeToyota has added ‘Prime’ to the branding of its second generation plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) to emphasize it’s the most technologically advanced, best-equipped Prius ever. Prime is the first Toyota hybrid to feature a dual-mode generator drive system that enables the Hybrid Synergy Drive’s electric motor and generator to both provide power for maximum acceleration. A new 8.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack delivers up to 22 miles of all-electric driving, double that of the first-generation plug-in Prius. Toyota estimates 120 MPGe or greater or the model, which is expected to be the highest MPGe rating of any PHEV.

Prime features an array of connected and advanced electronics systems including an available 11.6-inch HD multimedia screen. Prius Prime will start appearing in U.S. showrooms in late fall and will be available in all 50 states.

Automated Fusion Hybrid Research VehicleFord aims to have one of the largest automotive research teams in Silicon Valley with the establishment of its Research and Innovation Center Palo Alto, California. The center’s focus is to accelerate development of technologies and experiments in connectivity, mobility, autonomous vehicles, customer experience, and big data…in other words, the touchstones that may well define the future of personal transportation. As part of its activities, Ford has formed a research alliance with Stanford and will be delivering a Fusion Hybrid Autonomous Research Vehicle to university engineers for next-phase testing.

The new center expands the automaker’s global network of research and innovation centers that include its center in Dearborn, Michigan that focuses on advanced electronics, human-machine interface, materials science, big data, and analytics; plus its Aachen, Germany-based facility that focuses on next-generation powertrain research, driver-assist technologies, and active safety systems.

 

Der neue Volkswagen e-GolfVolkswagen has called for greater state and federal government support to bolster the next level of adoption of electric vehicles. At the 2015 Electric Drive Congress in Washington D.C., VW product marketing and strategy VP Jörg Sommer pointed out that automakers have largely delivered the electric vehicles that can satisfy the needs of most drivers, but also said more is needed. VW is investing $10 million in electric vehicle charging infrastructure by 2016 with other companies and industries also making significant EV infrastructure investments. Still, Sommer says that continuing legislative support is needed to accomplish strategic electric vehicle goals.

Specifically, VW would like to see federal financing support for creating fast charge networks along interstate corridors and in urban areas. It is also calling for a greater commitment on the part of state and federal organizations to buy battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, with federal purchasing guidelines that support this by giving fleet purchasers greater flexibility. Also on VW’s radar is additional congressional support with the mid-term review of EPA’s greenhouse gas regulation, with the aim of extending plug-in vehicle multiplier credits beyond the 2021 model year.

3d-printed-carThe evolving world of 3D printing is nothing less than astonishing. Today, 3D printing is being used to help create everything from body parts to car parts. As demonstrated at last year’s SEMA Show, an entire car can also be created in real time and driven off under its own power. Now students at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore have built the first solar electric car with a 3D-printed body shell that has 150 individually 3D printed parts.

Mounted on a carbon fiber chassis and designed from scratch by NTU undergraduates, the solar NV8 and companion NV9 three-wheeled racer were built within a year at the Innovation Lab housed at the School of Mechanical and Aerospace engineering. The team’s 16 students and mentor Associate Professor Ng Heong Wah collaborated with various NTU schools and research centers, plus sponsors and institutions including Stratasys, Creatz3D, and the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART).

The cars will race in the Shell Eco-Marathon Asia hosted in Manilla at the end of this month. According to the mechanical engineering students Kam Sen Hao and Ng Jun Wen who designed the NV8, the solar car was originally envisioned to feature a supercar design but the competition’s dimensional requirements resulted in a more sensible micro-car with vertical opening doors.

DC Fast ChargeExpanding the driving range capabilities of electric cars through fast charging is of growing interest. Tesla has keyed in on this with its high-profile Supercharger network of fast chargers along major transportation corridors. While this is great for Tesla owners, it’s not a comfort to drivers of other EVs since the SuperCharger network is not compatible with their cars.

Enter ChargePoint, VW, and BMW, which have joined together to offer similar capabilities for other electric vehicle models. The three are developing express electric vehicle charging corridors with fast charging stations that allow EV drivers to recapture up to an 80 percent charge in just 20 minutes. Fast charging sites will be strategically spaced no more than 50 miles apart to make longer trips possible for EVs that incorporate a DC fast charging capability.

Initial efforts will focus on heavily-traveled routes on the East and West Coasts, providing 100 DC fast chargers at existing ChargePoint sites. The aim is to expand fast charging capabilities to other sites within the ChargePoint network, which already offers more than 20,000 charging spots in North America. EV drivers can access the network with a ChargePoint or ChargeNow card or with the ChargePoint mobile app.

ram-1500-ecodiesel-hfeThe Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, a model already leading the pickup pack in fuel efficiency, just keeps getting better. The pickup’s new HFE (High Fuel Efficiency) version now bumps up the clean diesel model’s highway fuel economy by another mile per gallon, delivering the highest fuel economy of all current full-size pickups.

Like the standard EcoDiesel model, the HFE’s efficiency is achieved in part by an eight-speed automatic transmission, stop-start system, thermal management system, pulse-width modulation, and active aerodynamics that includes grille shutters and air suspension that lowers the truck at speed for better aerodynamics. The new HFE variant gets a unique trim package and is available with a body-colored fascia adopted from the Ram Express model for a sporty appearance, plus distinguishing HFE badging, of course.

Well, this should be no surprise. Reuters reports what we’ve suspected all along because there’s a long history of this happening: Low gasoline prices are negatively impacting the sale of alternative fuel vehicles including those running on natural gas and electricity.

Not surprisingly, with lower gasoline prices comes a decided uptick in purchases of larger and lower efficiency vehicles, especially SUVs. Beyond personal transportation, the commercial sector is also being hit hard because the cost differential involved in buying large natural gas trucks presently fails to pencil out well compared to conventionally powered models.

Is this a trend? Only short term, really. Green Car Journal editors have noted such occurrences over the past two decades and the trend has always ebbed and flowed with varying fuel prices, incentives, and other factors. While the long-term prospects for battery electric vehicles hinge on lower cost batteries in the future, hybrids and high efficiency conventional vehicles are here to stay.

Chevrolet Offers Sneak Peek At Next-Gen Chevy Volt

The Consumer Electronics Show is a big deal in the consumer electronics industry. With the expanding integration of advanced electronics into cars it has become a high-profile venue for auto manufacturers as well, with automaker CEOs giving keynote addresses and auto press conferences growing in volume. Most of these involve connectivity, autonomous driving, and other advanced on-board systems. But the scope is expanding significantly as CES is growing ever-brighter on the automakers’ radar.

A case in point is Chevy’s move to provide a sneak peek of its all-new 2016 Chevy Volt extended range electric car at 2015 CES. This preempts the official debut of the new Volt at the coming North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, one of the auto industry’s premier events.

The ‘peek’ was just that – a teaser showing the new Volt’s front end and a bit of the driver’s side, with the rest blocked with purposeful positioning and a strategically placed speaker tower. Still the front end view showed a handsome evolutionary design with the partial profile that could be seen indicating a somewhat smaller model with a redefined roofline and window design. It has been previously disclosed that the 2016 Volt will use a new 1.5-liter engine-generator, a bigger battery pack, and offer additional range.

Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell vehiclesIt may be more straightforward to add hydrogen fueling stations than previously thought. One of the many challenges faced by a developing hydrogen fueling infrastructure is where to site new stations. Thus, the thought: What if hydrogen fueling could be added to existing gas stations at a more affordable cost?

A recent study by Sandia National Laboratories concludes that a number of existing gas stations in California can safely store and dispense hydrogen, illustrating that a broader network of hydrogen fueling stations may be within reach. Seventy gas stations in California – the state with the largest number of existing hydrogen stations – were examined to determine if any could add hydrogen fueling based on the 2011 NFPA 2 hydrogen technologies code published by NFPA (National Fire Protection Association).

The result? It appears that 14 of the 70 stations explored could readily accept hydrogen fuel, with an additional 17 potentially able to integrate hydrogen with property expansions. The code provides fundamental safeguards for the generation, installation, storage, piping, use, and handling of hydrogen in gaseous or cryogenic liquid form. According to Sandia, a key factor in the codes is the separation required for fueling infrastructure, including fuel dispensers, air intakes and tanks, and storage equipment. The code defines required distances between such components and public streets, parking, on-site convenience stores, and perimeter lines around the site.

The study shows that more hydrogen fueling stations can be built if safety issues are examined within a technical framework that focuses on the real behaviors of hydrogen. Under the previous code, which was developed through an expert opinion-based process rather than the risk-informed process developed by Sandia, virtually no hydrogen fuel cell stations could be sited at existing stations. Also, the previous code was developed for flammable gases in an industrial setting, which carries different risks compared to hydrogen fuel at a fueling station.

Nissan creates “world’s cleanest car” – a zero emissionsHere’s a thought: What if you never had to wash your car? Just think of the time and money that would no longer need to be devoted to this task, let alone the water saved in an increasingly water-starved world. That’s the concept being forwarded by Nissan through an electric LEAF sporting a special superhydrophobic and oleophobic paint designed to repel water and oils. Marketed by UltraTech International, Ultra-Ever Dry self-cleaning paint works by creating a layer of air between the car’s finish and an often hostile outside environment. The net effect is keeping standing water and road spray from messing up the car’s surface.

Will we see this anytime soon? It does appear that Nissan is taking this seriously, and the paint has been undergoing testing by engineers at Nissan Technical Center Europe. While there are no plans to offer Nissan models with the special paint, the automaker says it may make the paint treatment available as a future aftermarket option.

2014 Pikes Peak Int. Hill Climb Practice DayMitsubishi has again shown its aptitude for taking on traditional race cars at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado. Its electric-powered MiEV Evolution III prototype racecars finished first and second in the Electric Vehicle division, with its lead car finishing just 2.4 seconds behind the overall 2014 Pikes Peak race winner, a gasoline-powered Le Mans sports car prototype driven by Romain Dumas.

The winning MiEV was piloted by six-time PPIHC motorcycle champion Greg Tracy with the second-place MiEV driven by two-time Dakar Rally winner Hiroshi Masuoka, who crossed the finish like just over four seconds after Tracy. To his credit, Tracy is the first driver in the event's history to record a sub-10 minute lap time in both two- and four-wheel racing categories.

volvo-concept-estate-cabinVolvo’s new Concept Estate not only continues to reveal this automaker’s evolving design language, but also illustrates that Volvo is ready for the ‘big screen.’ Of special interest is this concept wagon’s interior design, which integrates a large tablet-like touchscreen at the center of the dash, a sure sign that connectivity and infotainment loom large in Volvo’s future, as they do with all automakers.

The automaker says its aim is to organize controls and information in an intuitive and user-friendly way, with the portrait touchscreen serving as the control panel for Volvo’s in-car user experience. This strategy does away with all buttons and controls save for a select few, including functions like window heaters, hazard warning, volume, and play/pause. From a design standpoint, this greatly simplifies interior architecture and provides significant design freedom for Volvo designers.

mahindra-formula-eMahindra Racing, the motor sports division of India’s Mahindra Group, has officially unveiled its Formula E race car. This represents the country’s first entry in the electric race car series. Featuring a lightweight carbon fiber and aluminum monocoque, the race car is powered by a 270 hp electric motor that enables a top speed of 140 mph and 0-62 mph (100 km/h) acceleration in 2.9 seconds.

Racing has historically played an important part in proving advanced technologies and serving as a gateway to their use on the highway. The Formula E Championship series that begins this coming September will see electric race cars at various venues around the world including city centers in Angeles, London, and Beijing. Ten races are scheduled the first season.

 

tesla-storeTesla, the upstart Silicon Valley company that’s proved an entrepreneurial automaker far from Detroit can make an exceptional and aspirational electric car, is embroiled in yet another fire controversy. Even as the National Highway Transportation Administration (NHTSA) continues its investigation into two crash-related Model S fires in the U.S. (but not a third fire in Mexico that’s out of its jurisdiction), this advanced electric car’s safety continues to raise questions.

The latest is the subject of media reports involving a fire in Toronto, Canada earlier this month, in which a Model S is involved while reportedly parked in a garage and unplugged. While conclusions have not yet been reached by Canadian authorities, a Tesla statement says the company has identified that the fire did not originate in the car’s battery or any components involved in charging.

Tesla maintains that the Model S has no battery issues and has an exceptional safety track record, and indeed the model achieved top five star crash testing scores across the board in NHTSA test protocols. However, what remains unexplained is whether there are specific issues that must be addressed to prevent further crash-related fires, thus NHTSA’s ongoing investigation.

This is a topic of sometimes passionate debate as Tesla proponents vigorously defend the model while others point to unintended consequences of battery power. It will be interesting to watch reactions and commentary once the NHTSA investigation is complete.

fisker-karma-leadIt has not been an easy road for Fisker Automotive, manufacturer of the stunning Karma extended range electric car. A series of misfortunes led to this automaker suspending production and ultimately filing for bankruptcy. Now it appears this model is poised for reemergence through China’s Wanxiang Group, the company that just won a bidding war to acquire the assets of Fisker Automotive, including its sought-after patents and its Wilmington, Delaware plant that’s valued at up to $50 million.

After 19 rounds of bidding, Wanxiang won out over another Chinese company, Hybrid Tech Holdings, with a bid valued at $149.2 million. This reportedly represents $126.2 million in cash, $8 million of assumed liabilities, and a contribution of common equity in an affiliate designated by Wanxiang to acquire the assets of Fisker Automotive. The winning bid is subject to bankruptcy court approval.

It is not yet clear whether Wanxiang will actually be able to use the name ‘Fisker’ or the Fisker logo, which apparently were licensed to Fisker Automotive through Fisker Coachbuild, a separate company co-founded by Bernie Koehler and Henrik Fisker.

2015 Nissan Frontier

 

Nissan’s one-of-a-kind Frontier Diesel Runner made its first appearance at the Chicago Auto show, illustrating this automaker’s interest in the increasingly important clean diesel pickup market. Powered by a 2.8-liter Cummins turbo diesel with nearly 200 horsepower and, more importantly, some 350 lb-ft torque, the pickup features the performance and functionality required of today’s pickup buyers who often combine work and personal applications.

The Diesel Runner is based on Nissan’s Frontier Desert Runner 4x2 model and was created to gauge consumer reaction to a diesel-powered midsize Nissan pickup. No doubt, things will go in that direction. Nissan already has a partnership with Cummins to provide 5.0-liter turbodiesel V-8s for its next-generation Titan full-size pickup that’s arriving in 2015.

carbon-fiberCan cost-efficient carbon fiber be created from renewable, non-food-based feedstocks like agricultural residues and woody biomass? The Department of Energy believes so and is now putting up $12 million in funding to help make it happen. The agency says that carbon fiber created from biomass offers greater environmental benefits than traditional carbon fiber produced from natural gas or petroleum, and also believes it may be less costly to manufacture.

Lightweighting is a growing trend in auto manufacturing as one of many strategies to help create more efficient vehicles. Advanced materials like carbon fiber may play an important role if this material can be created more sustainably and, importantly, more affordably. DOE points out that reducing vehicle weight just 10% can improve fuel economy by 6% to 8%. More information is available at DOE’s Funding Opportunity Exchange website.

tesla-model-sSaleen Automotive’s offerings are traditionally gasoline-driven and they are fast. The company is well-known in automotive circles for its stylish and performance-oriented versions of noted sports cars like Ford Mustangs, Chevy Camaros, and Dodge Challengers. Now Saleen is turning attention to high-performance in the electrified world with a new effort involving Tesla’s Model S.

Company CEO Steve Saleen says this latest focus on the Tesla Model S is not a departure from Saleen Automotive’s own core values of elite power, style, and performance. Rather, he feels the Model S epitomizes the sports car of the electric vehicle field, which of course would make it a natural for the company. Saleen says they are working on renderings and engineers are preparing a spec sheet that will detail some of the enhancements and innovations that Saleen Automotive aims to add to the Saleen Tesla Model S.
