Whatever the comparison, what’s important is that the annual Green Car Awards season is here. And we’re excited about it.
Over more than two decades, we’ve announced these high-profile awards at multiple venues including Los Angeles ajnd Washington DC. The Green Car Awards stage has held the attention of crowds eagerly awaiting the announcement of winners. Early on, then-juror Caroll Shelby took the stage. At another time, Jay Leno provided the introduction. Determining finalists and winners has always been an involved process by design because that’s the way it should be. But today it’s more complicated. The industry has changed over time and there’s greater uncertainty in the market. It’s more challenging to determine which vehicles may qualify as model introductions can be delayed, promised on-sale dates may slip, and planned vehicle programs may be axed altogether. We’ve also seen automakers exit the market completely. Even so, the deep dives involved in the process are joyful because there’s so much to absorb about the state of the auto industry and the direction of our driving future.
To that end, Green Car Journal’s 2027 Green Car Awards are here to highlight vehicles that move environmental progress forward in meaningful ways. This year’s winners represent the most environmentally positive new vehicles across a range of consumer needs and lifestyles, from attainable electric choices and premium EVs to efficient family transportation, neighborhood travel, and commercial needs. There’s long been a real desire for an affordable, full‑function electric car at a true entry‑level price, at least in the sense of what entry‑level means in the electrified world. With the high cost of batteries and typically low‑volume manufacturing, we’re still far from the easy‑entry cars of the past at under twenty grand, like the Honda Fit, Kia Rio, and Ford Fiesta. Full‑function electric cars have never been that low even with substantial incentives, and while that may change over time, the bar remains much higher than the familiar $20,000 benchmark.
Still, an electric car under $30,000 today is notable, and there are just a few. Standing out and taking the magazine’s prestigious Green Car of the Year title is the all‑new Kia EV3 electric compact crossover. There’s been some serious innovation in the BMW camp as this automaker strives to bolster its claim as the “ultimate driving machine” and shift into gear for the future. Exemplifying this is BMW’s iX3, the first series-production model built on the company’s next‑generation Neue Klasse architecture that will guide BMW’s electric future.
Sixth‑generation BMW eDrive technology, cylindrical battery cells, and advanced digital systems support long‑range driving and refined performance in this premium model. The iX3’s clean exterior lines blend familiar BMW identity with the modern design language of the Neue Klasse era, while a streamlined digital interface and premium materials define the cabin.
